Autumn is the most wonderful time of the year! Beautiful foliage, delightful foods, fireplaces, shorter days, the cool night air… No wonder it’s a favorite season for most! Though every fall ignites our hearts with feelings of warmth and joy, our inner Jon Snow tells us that Winter is Coming… and it is. So push away the pumpkins and smores, and pack up your Halloween costume (you don’t look anything like The Hulk anyway), it’s time to adult and get your home ready by:

1.) Cleaning Gutters:

Not a task most are thrilled about, but an important one at that. Failing to clean your gutters can result in roof and water damage, and those repairs come at a hefty price. Lowe’s recommends beginning near a downspout, then removing large debris (leaves, twigs, etc.) with a trowel to dump it in a bucket, using a hose to wash out finer materials. While this will not be a quick and easy task, tackling it every fall and spring is well worth the time commitment.

2.) Washing Windows:

Another task that’s not for the faint of heart. Listen, nobody wakes up thrilled about cleaning windows… but watch an episode of House Hunters, and everyone is over-the-moon to see all that “natural light”! The best time of year to wash your windows is in the fall and the spring when the weather is not too hot. It’s also great if you can tackle window washing on a day when there’s lots of overcast (since sunlight can cause streaking). And while window washing isn’t up there with eating pies and pumpkin picking, doing it the right way can make all the difference. So follow these instructions and quit complaining!

3.) Winterizing Your Yard:

Keep your outdoor furniture, yard equipment and pool supplies in tip-top shape for next year by cleaning items thoroughly, wrapping them accordingly, and storing them indoors. If space is an issue, consider renting a self-storage unit in your neighborhood. Storage facilities are affordable and provide climate control and 24/7 security. Best of all, many sites offer drive-up access, so loading and unloading large items is a breeze. A nice, brisk fall breeze. Oh, autumn. We love you!

Just think… once you’re done adulting, you can enjoy all that autumn has to offer! In the words of George Eliot, “Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”

Happy Autumn!
