If you are part of the growing number of millennials who are choosing to live small, you’re not alone. A recent study conducted by the National Association of Home Builders found that, “…millennials, who are entering the home-buying market in larger numbers, are driving down home size.”

In fact, in Live small, be happier, the BBC cites a report from Nielsen showing, “…40% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 36 prefer to live in urban areas instead of the suburbs. In the UK, a Knight Frank study found 54% of 18 to 24 year olds were happy to consider living in a studio flat that makes living in central locations more affordable.” The study goes on to state that, “…the trend doesn’t just apply to young people…many empty nesters have been selling their houses in the suburbs to buy a place in the city.”

According to Why people are choosing to live in smaller spaces and are happier for it, “People are getting tired of huge houses that aren’t particularly well-built and cost a fortune in mortgage payments and maintenance. As modern families are getting bigger houses, they are also falling deeper into debt and less satisfied with life.”

Even though the trend to purchase and live small is on the rise (and with good reason!), finding ways to make tight spaces work can be a challenge. ABC’s article, Living in a Tiny Home: Benefits & Drawbacks, states that in order for small living to be successful for any person or family, “…you need to utilize every organizing idea for small spaces, otherwise your tiny home will look like a cluttered closet. You won’t want to spend time there.”

While purging belongings and being minimal with possessions is the best way to maximize space within any home, utilizing a local storage facility is another. Stephanie Goldstein of StorageSeeker.com states in 3 Reasons to Rent a Storage Unit When Living in a Small Apartment that storage provides renters (or tiny-home owners) the ability to rotate seasonal items, enjoy outdoor lifestyles/hobbies, and keep items they genuinely have use for, making any  small space “…a cutter-free sanctuary you look forward to coming home to each evening!”

With storage units available in nearly every metropolitan area at an affordable price, renting one to keep sports equipment, seasonal decor, children’s accessories or other necessary items is a budget-friendly solution. Since most units are climate controlled and provide 24/7 security, renters can rest assured their belongings are secure (at an affordable price).

As per Jane Austen, “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” So live small and smart. To clutter-free, small-living in 2019!
