Let’s face it, 2020 has been a rough year. With all that we have been through, we want 2021 to be even better – and our health and wellness are an important part of that! If you want to achieve your health goals this new year, these simple tips can help.
Declutter your home.
Countless studies have indicated that clutter affects our anxiety level, sleep, and ability to focus. Cleaning up and clearing out can help! Start by tackling one area of your home each day for just 15 minutes, grouping items into keep, donate, and discard piles. As a rule of thumb, if you haven’t used the item in the past 3 months, and do not have a genuine plan or purpose for it over the next 3, get rid of it. If space is an issue, consider renting a local self-storage unit. You can keep larger items, such as camping gear or seasonal décor off-site, maximizing space for items you need each day.
Address your mental health.
We’ll get to the physical stuff in a moment, but for now, let’s address the emotional. It’s the most important AND the most overlooked. Address the issues you need to address, and be committed to finding someone to speak to on a regular basis to keep all the wheels turning as they should. Whether it be a licensed professional, life coach, or mentor, decide to be honest with yourself and others, asking for help and setting boundaries when needed.
Before the new year begins, remove unhealthy and processed foods from your pantry. Then, take some time to plan what you are going to eat throughout the week so that you avoid unhealthy, spontaneous meals. This will help you make better decisions each day when it comes to what you eat (and help you save money as well). With various menu options and plans available online, finding one that works for you is simple, easy, and well worth the time and effort.
If committing to a long workout each day seems unrealistic for you, there are other ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Consider taking your dog for an extra walk around the block, using the stairs instead of the elevator, or simply walking to the store instead of driving down the road! Best of all, if you do enjoy more intense workouts or sporting activities, you can keep equipment at a nearby self storage unit, so that you don’t take up much needed space at home.
Do make having fun a priority.
If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that we need to find time for the things we enjoy. Take on a hobby you have always wanted to try, and allow yourself one evening as a cheat for dessert. Spend time with family and friends that bring you joy, and choose to rid yourself of relationships that are truly toxic. This is YOUR year to shine! In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man.”
