With high school graduation just around the corner, it’s important to begin preparing yourself for college. These 5 simple tips can help.

1.) Determine What You Will Need And Start Shopping Early

Create a list of items you will need for your dorm and start the shopping process early. By purchasing a little at a time and being strategic with what you buy, you are certain to get the best prices, and not become overwhelmed (emotionally or financially).

2.) Develop a Move-In/Move-Out Plan

Find a self-storage unit close to campus that you can use to store items that will not fit within your dorm room (such as seasonal clothing or sporting equipment). You can also use your storage unit to keep your items when the semester is complete, saving you and your family the time and hassle of moving your items back and forth from college to home.

3.) Read Several Books About Majors of Interest to Help Prepare

Whether you are heading off to college with the intention of majoring in a specific subject, or are unsure as to where to begin, consider reading several books within your major (or tentative major) to begin preparing. Workbooks in various core math, English and history subjects are also beneficial to keep your mind and skills fresh.

4.) Set a Spending Budget And Stick to It

With most students heading off to college with student loans up their wazoo (yes, that is the formal term), setting a budget for yourself is imperative to ensure you do not spend more on your daily living expenses than you truly need to.

5.) Enjoy Time With Family And Friends At Home

Before you head off to college, be sure to spend time with those who mean the most to you at home. This summer is an exciting time, so allow your family and friends to be apart of it by having some moments you will cherish forever.

Life is the most exciting opportunity we have. But we have one shot. You graduate from college once, and that’s it. You’re going out of that nest. And you have to find that courage that’s deep, deep, deep in there. Every step of the way.” -Andrew Shue

By remaining organized, utilizing a self-storage unit and taking some time to study, as well as enjoy those dearest to you, you are well on your way to a successful college career. There’s an exciting journey ahead, make the most of it!

Congratulations on your graduation!
