It’s official: American’s are overwhelmed by clutter! A survey published by the National Association of Professional Organizers found that “…54% of Americans feel overwhelmed by clutter.” With “…78% [having] no idea what to do with it!”
Researchers at UCLA have confirmed these findings in their study to understand the correlation between clutter and stress. They found that “…clutter has a profound effect on our mood and self-esteem….the more stuff, the more stress… The more dishes that pile up in the sink, the more anxious…” and even when families want to reduce their clutter, they “…often are emotionally paralyzed when it comes to sorting and pitching objects. They either can’t break sentimental attachments to objects or believe their things have hidden monetary value.” With figures like that, it’s no wonder that anxiety disorders are increasing throughout the United States!
Here’s the good news: You are not alone! Another survey found that “Sixty-three percent of Americans (63%) say they “have too much stuff” — about the same percentage who say they have at least one closet, drawer or room in their home “filled with stuff I don’t need” (59%).”
Here is some even better news: We have some tips, tricks, and storage solutions that can help get your home clutter free and organized, and stay that way!
1.) Have your daily “run through” for 20 minutes so that your home remains fresh and clutter doesn’t have the opportunity to pile up.
A daily run through are things that you need to do each day – such as pick up toys (if your children aren’t old enough to put them away themselves), tidy up the kitchen, vacuum and quickly wipe down the bathrooms. If you have a dog or a cat, you may want to alternate between the bathrooms and vacuuming each day, so that you aren’t spending such a large chunk of time cleaning everything.
2.) Next, break your home into weekly zones, deep cleaning specific areas for a short period of time each day.
In addition to your daily run through, pick a zone within your home to focus on each week, and spend 15 minutes a day within it – targeting a specific section. You will be amazed at how spotless and decluttered the room becomes. Combine this with your daily cleaning schedule, and your home will be sparkling in no time.
3.) Do a load of laundry each day and you will no longer feel like it’s a never ending battle!
Just do a load each day – no matter what it is. This will prevent laundry from piling up, and make it far easier to sort through and put away. Best of all – you will always have clean clothes, making living out of laundry baskets a thing of the past.
4.) Take advantage of affordable storage solutions right in your neighborhood.
Let’s face it, sometimes certain items just don’t fit within your home. Whether it be sports equipment, seasonal decor, memorabilia, photo albums, seasonal clothing or camping gear, finding a place to put larger, more “seasonal” items can be a challenge.
