Since autumn and winter mean more time indoors, finding ways to keep your home organized while spending more time within it can be a challenge.

In The Mental and Emotional Benefits of Spring Cleaning, Lindsay Tigar states that, “During the winter months, it’s totally normal to spend more time indoors collecting takeout containers, dust, and some Netflix-binge-induced pounds. But as the sun starts to make its grand return post-daylight saving, it’s time to push away the clutter and make room for a new season.”

We agree!

However, rather than waiting until the warmer months approach, tackling the clutter within your home in real-time can save you the hassle of a major clean-out, allowing you to enjoy your sacred home-space the entire year through!

Not sure where to start? These simple tips can help.

Cleaning Schedule

If you’re like most Americans, cleaning can be a major source of stress for you and your family. According to a recent survey, “84 percent of recently stressed Americans say they worry that their home isn’t clean enough, and within that group, 55 percent called it out as a major source of recent stress.”

Instead of approaching your cleanliness within your home as a never ending battle in which you are the losing party, enlist the help of a ready-made cleaning schedule you and your family can use to keep on track. By tending to just a few smaller tasks each day, your home will be well tended to, stopping you from feeling overwhelmed and clutter-filled.

Sort, Discard & Donate

Let’s face it. We all have items we don’t need lying around our homes. For some reason, we find it easier to just keep them instead of disposing of or donating them, which only causes us to become frustrated by the lack of space in our closets and drawers. Rather than having a massive purge once a year, make a conscious effort to get rid of items you don’t need as they come in or as you see them.

Start with one closet or furniture piece at a time and ask yourself…

Have I used this item in the last 3 months?”

If not, “Do I have a genuine plan or purpose for it within the next 3?”

If nothing comes to mind, either donate the item or toss it. You’ll be amazed at the amount of space you will now have.

Utilize a Storage Rental

For items that are simply too large to keep within your home, such as sporting equipment, seasonal decor or seasonal clothing, consider renting a self-storage unit in your area to keep items when you aren’t using them. Doing so will make your home feel much more spacious, as well as provide you with the room you need for items you use on a regular basis. And since most storage facilities are climate controlled with 24-7 video surveillance, you can rest assured your items are safe and secure (at an affordable price).

By setting a clear course of action to clean your home, discarding items you don’t need in real time, and renting some off-site storage, your home will remain in tip-top shape the whole entire year!

Who knew remaining organizing could be so easy!

(You’re welcome!)
